Contains six journals with sketches and drawings (some in color) of batik patterns, figures, and other subjects such as her
travels in Europe, personal reflections, poetry, pressed flowers, and samples of yarn dyed with a variety of natural plant
extracts. Also contains numerous drawings and ink sketches of figures and cloth patterns (some are watercolor), 32 photographs
(various sizes, b & w and color), poems, correspondence, miscellaneous records, receipts, and ephemera. Photographs of Hill
range from age 1 to 21.

Note:
Jean Margaret Hill, born in Pasadena, California in 1953, was an artist interested in ethnic folk art, batik, weaving, tie-dye,
macrame, and mixed media. In the early 1970s she hitchhiked around Europe sketching cloth patterns from batiks and the people
she met along the way. Hill and her boyfriend Paul Studenski were killed in an automobile accident on the way to a Studenski
family reunion near Topeka, Kansas on August 31, 1973.
The Studenski Memorial Award is a grant up to $4000 dollars established in the memory of Paul Studenski, a Caltech graduate
(B.S.,1972) who was killed in an automobile accident while traveling across the country in 1973. It is awarded to a Caltech
undergraduate who has reached a crossroads in life and would benefit from a period away from the academic community to obtain
a better understanding of self and to explore possible directions for his/her future.
